Technology Organizations Align to Support United Nations' ITU-T G.hn Standard

Kudos to HomeGrid Forum, who’s just announced new agreements with global technology organizations, Consumer Electronics Powerline Communication Alliance (CEPCA), HomePNA Alliance, and Universal Powerline Association (UPA).

Last month, I had the chance to interview HomeGrid Forum President, Matt Theall, where he and his team were working closely with leading organizations to move the industry to a single wired home networking standard.

The whole idea makes tons of sense: when you work together, you make the purchase and installation process much easier, enable new services to be delivered around the home, and fuel market growth. And having one unified standard will also simplify home networking for consumers and service providers around all over the world.

These groups represent the growing ecosystem of IPTV deployments, who are joining with HomeGrid Forum to promote G.hn and ensure co-existence between G.hn-based products and those using other current generation powerline, phoneline, and coax networking technologies.

Liaisons Add to HomeGrid Forum

The new liaisons to HomeGrid Forum join a growing list of industry-leading organizations, and will contribute to G.hn standardization in a variety of ways.

  • Akio Kurobe, CEPCA President, explained its synergy with HomeGrid.  "Our members look forward to working with HomeGrid to ensure the G.hn technology under development will co-exist with powerline technologies in the market and the forthcoming IEEE P1901 powerline standard that includes G.hn technology," said Kurobe.
  • "The HomePNA Alliance has been a leader in developing, standardizing, and deploying home networking for IPTV over both coax and phone wires," said William Simmelink, HomePNA president. "We believe the work HomeGrid is doing will help expand the market. Our membership, which includes companies such as AT&T, Motorola, Cisco, and CopperGate, is pleased to join with HomeGrid to bring the best G.hn technology and products to market as soon as possible."
  • "UPA is focused on helping in the development of global standards such as ITU-T G.hn for the fast developing powerline communications market," said Daniel Drolet, chairman of the Universal Powerline Association. "Working with HomeGrid Forum is clearly complementary to our own activities, and will allow for a true unified standard, and products that easily interoperate.
These organizations include the world's top consumer electronics manufacturers, service providers, PC manufacturers, network equipment manufacturers, semiconductor, and software companies. Yes, G.hn Will Simplify Wired Home Networking

I’ve got a wired home network at my house, being an AT&T U-verse customer. It runs on HomePNA and now that I have Total Home DVR, it really shows the potential of what you can do in a network. But this is just the start.

The next step up the food chain in wired home networks is going to be the G.hn standard. The notion of delivering a single technology for the wired home network that addresses key issues for service providers, electronics manufacturers, and consumers alike is going to breath new life into our industry.

And with one worldwide standard, G.hn will unify the networking of content and devices over any wire - coax cable, phone, and power lines. With it, service providers like AT&T who serves our home, will be able to deploy new offerings including IPTV more cost effectively. Consumer electronics manufacturers will be able to provide powerful devices for connecting all types of entertainment, home automation, and security products throughout the house.

I’m continuing to follow Matt and his team over at HomeGrid Forum. He and his PR / Marcom Consultant, Layla McHale are doing a great job in promoting and developing compliance and interoperability test programs for the G.hn standard.

These programs will simplify the development, purchase, installation, and use of HomeGrid Forum-Certified products through the entire ecosystem of silicon providers, services providers, consumer electronics companies, personal computer companies, and retailers.

The group continues to seek new members that can help drive the success of G.hn.

Rock on Matt!

AT&T Participating in G.hn Standard Development

I recently had a chance to visit with Tom Starr, Lead Member of Technical Staff for AT&T.  Tom is a recent AT&T award winner.

It stands to reason that the world’s largest telecommunications company would have an interested in G.hn.  After all, the company has over 1,000,000 American homes on its HomePNA based wired network that runs its U-verse triple play offering.

After installing this many homes you learn a lot about wiring and the realities that not all homes are wired equally.  In a perfect world, you’d have what Tom kept referring to “no new wires,” but the reality is that each home has different wiring types in each room that lend themselves better at connectivity and delivering services.

From day one, Tom has been active and working with the ITU’s development of the G.hn standard (which is now officially called G.9960).  He told me that AT&T is watching the development of the G.hn standard for a few reasons:

  1. Connect to any room no matter what the wiring type may be.  Get to a point where the customer can self-install new hardware- something considered to be the holy grail of any video provider
  2. Have built-in diagnostics and tools that allow for remote manageability and ease of use.
  3. Have multiple supply sources.  And when you have an industry standard like G.hn, you get to a certain point of critical mass where you will have many technology, equipment, parts and product marketers all supplying the channel with compatible and industry standard offerings.  This helps grow the industry ecosystem and supply chain.

I’ve been an AT&T U-verse customer for over three years.  Some of my readers may also know my 3Screens blog, in which I write a consumer facing blog about AT&T’s three screen strategy.

Now that I have a true IP home with triple play services, I personally look forward to AT&T’s deployment of the next generation of wired home networks- courtesy of the G.hn standard.
