What a week….G.hn is a go. Sigma Designs Buys CopperGate

Two events over the last week took place, which really matter. G.hn gets the green light on the physical layer and architecture portion, and Sigma Designs buys CopperGate. While expecting news on the first item, the second was more like icing on the wired home networking cake.
When you visit the Sigma Designs web site, their message is simple: “Powering the Digital Media Generation.” If you go to the investor’s presentation, which talks about the acquisition of CopperGate, you can begin to see how this not only made perfect sense, but is a glimpse at the future of G.hn in its own right.
Buying CopperGate gives Sigma two key strengths:
1. A new R&D team in Israel, a hub for telecom and multimedia expertise
2. It puts Sigma dead center on the residential gateway – a coveted piece of real estate in the home they previously did not own. Add in the wireless access point, the IP phone, and NAS (network attached storage) and it’s clear that the marriage of IPTV media processors combined with buying the leader in home networking, gives Sigma an edge in network home entertainment.
Next up for G.hn is the expected approval of the data link layer that is expected at the group’s next meeting in May 2010. This gives Sigma time to complete its acquisition, meld the two management teams as one, and ramp up for the build out of a transformational market opportunity in the wired home networking space.
