Breaking News: ITU Consents on three key recommendations for G.hn

January 15, 2010 5:01 PM  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

This just in....  the ITU-T has just consented three of the following recommendations:

·         G.9961: Data link layer (DLL) for unified high-speed wire-line based home networking transceivers

·     G.9960 Amendement 1

·     G.9960 Corrigendum 1

Last year, the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU)approved ITU-T G.9960, a standard that is designed to offer an in-home, high-speed network capable of delivering room-to-room high-definition television (HDTV).

Recommendation ITU-T G.9960 focused on the physical, or PHY layer, giving the data bit rate and quality of service necessary for triple-play residential services, as well as business-type services delivered over xDSL, passive optical network or other access technology, according to ITU.

The standard, published under the ITU G.hn banner, offers a standard for multimedia over power, coaxial, phone and other home network wiring. It is also intended to provide up to 20 times the throughput of existing wireless technologies and three times that of existing wired technologies, ITU experts said.

The specifications will be used by chip manufacturers to build transceivers that can be incorporated into set-top boxes, residential gateways, home computers, home audio systems, DVD players, TVs or any other device that might be connected to a network.

Experts say silicon companies will start incorporating the specifications into transceivers, implying that G.hn-compliant products could be on the market as early as 2010, according to ITU.

Joyce Putscher, principal analyst at In-Stat, said, "Service operators have been looking for an international standard that encompasses multiple existing-wire mediums for video distribution."

HomeGrid Forum is expected is issue a news release later today.  Stay tuned for more news on this breaking story.

"Apple Insider" Reporting..... Apple exploring home power system, mood sensing media software

January 14, 2010 7:01 PM  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

I'm wondering what one could do with an Apple tablet and how it would relate to managing the wired home network, linked to G.hn - products.

Now, AppleInsider is reporting on Apple's filing for "Intelligent Power Monitoring" describing a system that would identify networked hardware, along with processes on a computer, to determine how much power consumption is necessary to keep everything running. The system could then predict the cost of the existing power requirements, and allow users the ability to reduce their overall power consumption.

How do you think this could all tie into the home network and eventually on to the smart grid?

Read all about it here....

Panasonic's Eco Green Initiative Connects the Home to the Smart Grid

January 12, 2010 10:01 PM in Panasonic Eco Green  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

Panasonic had a great presence at CES with its Eco Green initiative.  I had a chance to catch up with Michael Buckner, Senior Manager of Panasonic's Energy Solutions Lab.  Panasonic is looking at ways to help manage energy inside the home and be connected to the Smart Grid.

Monster Cable is the New Plumbing Company of the Wired Home Network

January 12, 2010 4:01 PM in Monster  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

I'm declaring Monster as the new plumbing company of the wired home network.

At CES, they just introduced the world's fastest PowerLine Communication (PLC) product with its PowerNet 1G (SRP: $299.95).  Monster® PowerNet™ with PLC technology instantly turns a home's electrical wiring system into a high speed Ethernet network - empowering users to bring a reliable and secure broadband connection into any room at speeds as much as 5X faster than all PLC products currently on the market.

Yankee Group's Vince Vittore Talks About G.hn

Vince Vittore is Yankee Group's Principal Analyst on ITPV, cable and broadband video infrastructure and services.  He brings an interesting perspective as an Analyst because at heart, he's a great journalist.  I've followed Vince's work at Yankee Group, and knew him as Executive Editor at Telephony magazine, where he covered the market and independent telcos.

Here's his take on G.hn and its importance for service providers.

CES 2010: The Wired Home Network Means Green

January 11, 2010 9:01 PM in G.hn , HomeGrid Forum  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

Green was a theme at CES 2010.

The wired home network is not just a matter of connecting your TVs and PCs.

It's connecting and monitoring every device that touches your life inside and outside your home.

Follow HomeGrid Forum's lead in this regard.

G.hn is more than just the wired home network.  It's going to also be about the wired home network and connecting it to the smart grid. As previously announced, the ITU-T G.hn workgroup has agreed upon a number of key specifications that together, are forming the baseline requirements for G.hn Smart Grid products.

Beyond The Connected Home at CES 2010

January 11, 2010 8:01 PM in Z-Wave  | 0 comments  | 0 TrackBack

I am still sorting out what I saw at CES 2010.  When you're in a four day blur of seeing new products, services and technologies, let alone all the noise and mayhem of the show, it's important to step back and look for broader themes.

I previous wrote about 3D TV and the coming of Internet TV. It took my coming home, sitting in my own living room and realized that a more connected home - one that interfaces with helping to control my environment, save on energy and protect my family is another macro trend that I saw.

Z-Wave Alliance had its ecosystem of wired and wireless control system vendors in force - an emerging market opportunity that merits observation.  Many of its members are traditional vendors that are moving up the food chain in technology in the areas of lighting, appliance, HVA entertainment centers and security systems.

I shot a great video with an overview of the booth that I will be posting shortly.

G.hn Gets Real
